IB Diploma Programme Psychology SL is a rigorous Group 3 course that introduces students to the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes through three core theoretical lenses — biological, cognitive, and sociocultural — and two in-depth option areas chosen from Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Health Psychology, and the Psychology of Human Relationships.The biological approach examines how genetics, neurochemistry, brain structure, and evolutionary pressures shape behaviour. Students explore landmark research on neuroplasticity, the role of hormones and neurotransmitters, and the ethical complexities of animal research. The cognitive approach investigates how mental representations, schemas, and information-processing models explain perception, memory, and decision-making, including the growing influence of digital technology on cognition. The sociocultural approach explores how group membership, cultural norms, social identity, and globalization influence individual attitudes and behaviour, drawing on Tajfel's social identity theory, Bandura's social cognitive theory, and Hofstede's cultural dimensions framework.Research methodology is woven throughout the course rather than treated as a standalone unit. Students learn to evaluate experimental, correlational, case study, observational, and qualitative designs; apply ethical principles; and interpret descriptive statistics. This methodological literacy culminates in the Internal Assessment — a 1,500–2,000 word report of a simple experimental study that replicates or extends a published psychological investigation.External assessment comprises Paper 1 (core approaches, short-answer and extended response) and Paper 2 (option essays), together accounting for 75% of the final grade.
