IB Diploma Programme Psychology at Higher Level is a rigorous, evidence-based course that explores the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes through three complementary lenses: the biological, cognitive, and sociocultural approaches. Students examine how brain chemistry, genetics, and evolution shape behaviour; how mental representations, memory models, and cognitive biases influence thinking; and how culture, social identity, and group dynamics determine the way individuals act within society. At HL, each approach is extended with additional content: the biological approach includes a critical examination of animal research; the cognitive approach explores how digital technology is reshaping human cognition; and the sociocultural approach investigates the psychological effects of globalization on identity and behaviour.Beyond the three core approaches, HL students undertake an in-depth study of one of four options — Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Health Psychology, or Human Relationships — applying all three core approaches to a specialized domain and engaging with HL-only extension topics within that option. Research methodology is woven throughout the course, culminating in a unique Paper 3 examination in which HL students critically analyse an unseen piece of psychological research, evaluating its design, sampling strategy, ethical compliance, and validity.The Internal Assessment requires students to design and conduct a simple experiment replicating a published study, analyse data using an inferential statistical test, and write a 2,200-word report.
