Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) Standard Level is an IB Diploma Programme Group 3 subject that examines the social and ethical implications of information technology across eight real-world scenarios. Unlike a traditional computer science course, ITGS places technology in its human context: students learn to analyse how IT systems affect individuals, communities, and societies, and to evaluate the ethical dilemmas that arise when technology intersects with privacy, security, intellectual property, equality, and cultural identity.The course is organized around the ITGS triangle — a conceptual framework linking three strands: IT systems (the technical knowledge of hardware, software, networks, data, and communication technologies), social and ethical significance (the issues that arise from IT use), and specified scenarios (the eight real-world contexts in which these issues manifest, from healthcare and education to politics and the environment). Every piece of ITGS analysis requires students to move fluently among all three vertices of this triangle, avoiding the trap of treating technology or ethics in isolation.At Standard Level, students sit three external examination papers totalling 210 minutes and complete an Internal Assessment project in which they create a functional IT product for a real client, accompanied by a 2,000-word technical documentation report.
